"An officer will collect your card"
A caller claiming to be a police officer or bank investigator says your cards or cash are "evidence" in a fraud case — perhaps "corrupt staff at your bank branch" — and asks for your help with a secret operation.
They may even invite you to "verify" them by calling the bank — but they *stay on the line*, so your call goes straight back to an accomplice. Then a "courier" or taxi arrives at your front door to collect your card (with PIN), cash, gold or jewellery "for safekeeping." In Britain alone, police logged over £21 million lost to this in 2025, and most victims were in their late seventies or older.
What to do: police and banks never collect cards, PINs, cash or valuables from your home — never, in any country. To truly verify a call, hang up fully and call the official number *from a different phone*, or wait several minutes before dialling.
Threat examples
Officer speaking. Your card was cloned by staff inside your own branch — this is now a covert investigation and you must not discuss it with anyone. A plain-clothes courier will call at your address within the hour to collect the compromised card and your PIN for forensic examination.
