"This is your bank's fraud team"

A calm, professional voice says there's a suspicious transaction and they need to "secure" your account — by confirming the code that just arrived, or by moving your money to a "safe account."

Don't. A real bank never asks you to read back a code or to move money to protect it. Caller ID showing the bank's name proves nothing — numbers are easily faked.

What to do: hang up and call Standard Bank back yourself on the number on your card. There is no such thing as a "safe account." If they push you to move money quickly using PayShap, remember that instant transfers cannot be reversed once sent. If you've been defrauded, call the police on 10111.

The "safe account" pitch

This is the fraud team at Standard Bank. We've detected fraud on your account. For your protection, move your balance to the secure account we've opened for you. Stay on the line and don't tell anyone while the case is open.
