Why gift cards mean "scam"

Whenever anyone — a "tax office," "utility," "boss," romance, tech-support or sweepstakes — insists you pay or "verify" with gift cards and read the codes aloud, it is a scam.

What to do: no legitimate business or government ever asks for gift-card payment. Hang up and report it; the card brand may be able to freeze unspent funds.
